How should John’s time marker appear?
The manuscript gives ‘about the tenth hour.’ Converting it to about 4:00 p.m. assumes the common daylight reckoning and removes the form John wrote.
Why this default
“About the tenth hour” is default because it retains John’s stated form without assuming a particular clock conversion. “About four in the afternoon” may reflect common daylight reckoning, but the conversion is an interpretation rather than wording present in the text.
