What are the disciples asking—and then doing?
John repeats menō: ‘Where do you remain?’ and ‘they remained with him.’ Stay, remain, dwell, and abide all carry parts of its range.
Why this default
“Remain” is default because it can be repeated in both the disciples’ question and the narrator’s answer, preserving John’s menō echo. “Stay” is more conversational and “abide” more traditional, but either can shift tone when repeated.
