Should John’s two love-verbs sound different?
The sisters say Jesus philei Lazarus; the narrator says Jesus ēgapa Martha, her sister, and Lazarus. The verbs overlap substantially, but English can either preserve or smooth the shift.
Why this default
“Dearly love / love” is default because it lets the shift from phileō to agapaō remain audible without claiming that the two verbs express completely separate kinds of love. Repeating “love” foregrounds their overlap; “fond of” emphasizes affection more narrowly.
