The evidence beneath the English
Every consequential choice
leaves a record.
John, Mark, Matthew, and Luke were developed through direct Greek analysis, lexical work, and manuscript comparison. Where surviving witnesses materially disagree, the competing Greek readings and their effect on English remain open to the reader.

Textual basis
SBL Greek New Testament
Edited by Michael W. Holmes. The project's standardized, publicly inspectable Greek reference edition. It is not presented as retroactive proof that every existing chapter originated from one uniform printed edition.
This is an honest reference claim, not a retroactive claim that all completed work began from one uniform printed edition. Material manuscript forks remain independently documented at the reading they affect.

Μαρίας καὶ Μάρθας / Μαρίας καὶ Μαρίας
How should the unstable naming in verse 1 be displayed?
The standard text names Mary and her sister Martha. P66’s first hand appears to write ‘Mary and Mary,’ then corrects the second name. This local variation does not by itself remove Martha from the rest of the chapter.
Why this default
The corrected, broadly transmitted Martha reading is the continuous-text default, while P66’s visible first-hand Mary/Mary form remains selectable without treating one local correction as the removal of Martha from the narrative.
Evidence
ExternalP66’s first hand appears to repeat Mary’s name in verse 1 before correction to Martha; the continuous manuscript tradition reads Martha.
InternalImmediate repetition may be a copying error, but the correction is early enough that the first-hand form should remain visible.
