How far did Jesus’ love reach?
The line introduces the final meal by carrying Jesus’ prior love for his own into the actions and disclosures that follow before his departure.
Why this default
“Loved them to the end” is default because eis telos carries the narrative movement toward Jesus’ end while also allowing completeness of extent. “Completely” foregrounds fullness, while “to the uttermost” preserves both senses in traditional but less ordinary English.
