Jesus’ removal of the garments begins a deliberate sequence of rising, setting clothing aside, taking a towel, and assuming the posture of a household servant.
Why this default
“Lays down his outer garments” is default because the footwashing action implies Jesus removes the plural himatia while retaining what he needs to serve. “Lays down his garments” is formally closer and leaves the clothing layer unspecified; “puts aside his clothes” gives natural action but changes “lay down.”
