What marks Jesus’ friends?
The present middle verb portrays what Jesus is actively commanding them, not merely a static list inherited from elsewhere.
Why this default
‘If you do the things I command you’ is default because it preserves the conditional, the plural relative object, and Jesus’ active commanding. ‘Keep my commands’ is compact but substitutes a different Johannine construction; ‘practice’ adds an ongoing nuance to the English wording.
