What does the greatest love lay down?
Psychē can mean life, soul, or self. In context it names the person’s living life given for friends.
Why this default
‘Lay down his life’ is default because the surrounding comparison concerns a person giving his living life for friends, and John’s narrative uses the same expression for voluntary death. ‘Soul’ exposes psychē more formally, while ‘himself’ conveys the personal gift but replaces the noun.
