What does the greatest love lay down?
The saying defines the greatest love by self-giving for friends and anticipates the death through which Jesus will embody the love he commands.
Why this default
‘Lay down his life’ is default because the surrounding comparison concerns a person giving his living life for friends, and John’s narrative uses the same expression for voluntary death. ‘Soul’ exposes psychē more formally, while ‘himself’ conveys the personal gift but replaces the noun.
