Why this default
‘Remain’ is default because it is direct modern English for menō and can be repeated consistently across the vine, Jesus’ words, love, and the disciples. ‘Abide,’ ‘dwell,’ and ‘stay’ each add a distinct English tone; using one stable verb lets readers see the Greek repetition.
