What does the Father do with each branch?
Airei can mean takes away or lifts up; kathairei means cleanses or prunes. John’s second verb echoes ‘clean’ in verse 3, creating wordplay English can preserve only partially.
Why this default
‘Removes… cleans’ is the working default because ‘remove’ is the ordinary contextual force of airei for a fruitless branch, while ‘cleans’ preserves the audible kathairei–katharoi wordplay into verse 3. ‘Prunes’ explains the vineyard action more naturally, and ‘lifts’ keeps a possible sense of airei, so both remain open.
