How should Jesus’s reply sound here?
The Greek says simply egō eimi, ‘I am.’ English normally supplies ‘he,’ while the wording also echoes John’s wider self-identification language.
Why this default
‘I am’ is default because egō eimi stands without an expressed predicate and its bare form is important to John’s repeated self-identification language. ‘He’ is the referent English normally supplies from ‘Jesus the Nazarene,’ but that completion belongs to interpretation rather than the written reply.
