How should Pilate’s word order sound?
The emphatic pronoun can make the question sound incredulous: ‘You are the king?’ Modern punctuation is editorial.
Why this default
‘You are the king of the Judeans?’ is default because it preserves the emphatic opening pronoun and the Greek statement-order beneath Pilate’s question. Standard English inversion is smoother, but loses the incredulous emphasis; ancient manuscripts do not supply modern question punctuation.
