Idou is a demonstrative summons: look, behold, or here is. Anthrōpos means human or man.
Why this default
‘Look—the human’ is the working default because idou summons attention and anthrōpos names the human being rather than using the specifically male noun anēr. ‘Behold the man’ carries the traditional resonance, while ‘Here is the man’ gives Pilate’s presentation in natural English.
