Should John’s two temple words remain distinct?
The exchange turns on a narrated misunderstanding: Jesus’ hearers envision the monumental building, while the narrator directs readers toward his body.
Why this default
“Temple complex / sanctuary” is default because John changes from hieron, the wider sacred precinct, to naos, the sanctuary later identified with Jesus’ body. Rendering both as “temple” erases that lexical shift; “courts” clarifies location more narrowly than hieron itself.
