Should John’s two temple words remain distinct?
Hieron names the wider temple complex where commerce occurs. Naos in Jesus’ saying is the sanctuary—then identified with his body. Translating both ‘temple’ conceals the shift.
Why this default
“Temple complex / sanctuary” is default because John changes from hieron, the wider sacred precinct, to naos, the sanctuary later identified with Jesus’ body. Rendering both as “temple” erases that lexical shift; “courts” clarifies location more narrowly than hieron itself.
