How should Jesus address his mother?
Gynai is the ordinary direct-address form of ‘woman.’ It is not intrinsically insulting, but neither does the Greek say ‘mother.’
Why this default
“Woman” is default because it directly represents gynai and does not replace Jesus’ form of address with the contextual relationship “mother.” “Lady” helps modern readers hear possible politeness, but it adds a social nuance rather than translating the noun itself.
