What did the other disciple believe?
The Greek says only ‘he saw and believed.’ The object is unstated, and verse 9 cautions that they did not yet understand the resurrection Scripture.
Why this default
‘He saw and trusted’ is default because the Greek leaves the object of episteusen unstated, and the next verse says the disciples did not yet understand the resurrection Scripture. Supplying Mary’s report or the resurrection may explain the belief, but either turns an open narrative statement into a settled conclusion.
