What did the other disciple believe?
The beloved disciple’s response follows his entrance and sight of the arranged cloths, while the following explanation limits how fully that belief should be understood.
Why this default
‘He saw and trusted’ is default because the Greek leaves the object of episteusen unstated, and the next verse says the disciples did not yet understand the resurrection Scripture. Supplying Mary’s report or the resurrection may explain the belief, but either turns an open narrative statement into a settled conclusion.
