Why this default
‘She did not recognize that it was Jesus’ is default because Mary is already seeing him; what fails is identification, the contextual force of ouk ēdei. ‘Did not know’ is more formally direct, but can wrongly suggest lack of prior knowledge rather than failed recognition.
