How should Thomas’s double name be shown?
Both the Aramaic Thomas and Greek Didymos mean twin. John translates the name for his readers.
Why this default
‘Thomas—one of the Twelve, called Twin’ is default because it keeps the familiar name and translates Didymos just as John does for his readers. Leaving ‘Didymus’ untranslated preserves the Greek label but hides that Thomas and Didymos both carry the same twin meaning.
