Why does Mary say ‘we do not know’ when John names only her?
The verb is unmistakably plural. John’s compressed scene still lets Mary speak for companions not individually named.
Why this default
‘We do not know’ is default because oidamen is unambiguously plural even though John has named Mary alone in this compressed scene. Singularizing to ‘I’ harmonizes the narration by changing the verb; ‘none of us’ makes Mary’s implied companions more explicit than she does.
