Why this default
The default uses ‘love’ for agapaō and ‘care for’ for phileō so readers can see the Greek shift: Jesus changes verbs on the third question while Peter answers with phileō throughout. This does not claim a fixed hierarchy between the verbs—their ranges overlap substantially—so the single-verb option remains equally important.
