Why this default
‘More than these do’ is the working default because the nearby disciples provide a natural comparison and Peter had previously distinguished his loyalty from others. The compact pleon toutōn can also compare Jesus with the fishing things before Peter, so the object-focused and deliberately open renderings remain genuine alternatives.
