Is Jesus predicting that the disciple will live until his return?
Jesus refuses Peter’s comparison by placing the other disciple’s future under his own will and repeating Peter’s call to follow.
Why this default
‘If I want him to remain until I come’ is default because it preserves the explicit conditional and Jesus’ redirection of Peter. The sentence does not predict that the disciple will remain alive; the following verse itself corrects precisely that transformation of a hypothetical into a promise.
