Is Jesus predicting that the disciple will live until his return?
The conditional says ‘If I want him to remain until I come.’ It asserts no such outcome and redirects Peter to follow.
Why this default
‘If I want him to remain until I come’ is default because it preserves the explicit conditional and Jesus’ redirection of Peter. The sentence does not predict that the disciple will remain alive; the following verse itself corrects precisely that transformation of a hypothetical into a promise.
