Phaneroō means manifest, reveal, or make visible. John repeats it three times in the opening and summary.
Why this default
‘Revealed himself’ is default because it keeps the reflexive object and lets phaneroō repeat through the opening and summary. ‘Appeared’ is natural narrative English, but removes the chapter’s emphasis on Jesus actively making himself known.
