Must one be born again—or from above?
Anōthen carries both ‘from above’ and ‘again/anew.’ Nicodemus hears repetition; Jesus’ language also points to origin from above. A single English phrase cannot preserve the exchange.
Why this default
‘From above’ is the continuous-reading default because it fits John’s vertical imagery, but Nicodemus’s reply proves that the ‘again’ sense is active inside the exchange.
