Houtōs normally means ‘in this way’ or ‘thus.’ ‘So much’ reads emotional degree into a clause that points forward to how God loved: he gave.
Why this default
“In this way God loved the world” is default because houtōs ordinarily points to manner and the following clause explains that manner: God gave the unique Son. “So loved” retains familiar English ambiguity; “so much” makes emotional degree the explicit meaning.
