Was the purification dispute with one Judean or several?
The strongest early reading is singular and anarthrous: ‘with a Judean.’ A plural reading, ‘with the Judeans,’ became widespread in later transmission.
Why this default
The singular reading is default because it has strong early support; its English still requires the separate contextual choice ‘Judean/Jew.’
