How should the well scene’s time be displayed?
The Greek gives the sixth hour. Under ordinary daylight reckoning this is approximately noon, but converting it hides the ancient time system.
Why this default
“About the sixth hour” is default because it preserves John’s ancient time expression without turning an assumed reckoning into translated text. “About noon” is the likely ordinary-daylight equivalent, but the conversion is explanatory and not written in the verse.
