This is an honest reference claim, not a retroactive claim that all completed work began from one uniform printed edition. Material manuscript forks remain independently documented at the reading they affect.

Did Jesus distribute directly—or through the disciples?
The earliest text says Jesus distributed to those reclining. A later expansion inserts the disciples as intermediaries, harmonizing John with the Synoptic feeding accounts.
Why this default
The shorter reading is default because it has decisive early support and the longer reading transparently harmonizes John’s distribution sequence with the Synoptic accounts.
Evidence
ExternalThe direct distribution is supported by P66, P75, א, B, C, D and other early witnesses; the disciples clause dominates much of the later tradition.
InternalScribes had an obvious reason to insert the disciples from the parallel feeding narratives; omission of both coordinated clauses is less readily explained.
