Whom does John number at the meal?
John gives the seated group a count of about five thousand after Jesus tells the people to recline, but the narrative does not supply a total for every person present.
Why this default
“Men” is default because andres specifically identifies adult males in the stated count, unlike the broader anthrōpoi. “People” may better evoke the whole crowd but changes whom John explicitly numbers; “adult males” makes the lexical category fully explicit.
