Was Jesus walking on the sea—or at its surface?
After the disciples have rowed twenty-five or thirty stadia through rough water, they see Jesus approaching the boat in a manner that frightens them.
Why this default
“Walking on the sea” is default because epi with the genitive can locate movement upon a surface and the narrative plainly presents Jesus traversing the water. “Upon” preserves more formal spatial wording, while “over” can suggest movement suspended above it.
