Does Jesus say ‘I am not going’ or ‘I am not yet going’?
The addition of ‘yet’ relieves the apparent tension with Jesus going later in secret. Both readings are ancient and the shorter one is more difficult.
Why this default
‘Not yet’ is the working default because of strong early attestation, while the more difficult ‘not’ remains fully visible and may have prompted the clarifying addition.
Evidence
ExternalBoth readings are early: ‘not yet’ has P66, P75, B and other support; ‘not’ is supported by א, D and others.
Internal‘Yet’ may have been added to remove apparent contradiction, but accidental loss of the short syllable is also possible.
