Of what is the devil called father?
The masculine pronoun can point to the liar; context also naturally produces ‘father of the lie’ or ‘father of lies.’ English must identify the reference.
Why this default
“Its father” is default because it preserves the written pronoun without silently deciding whether the referent is the lie, lying, or the liar. “Father of lies” is idiomatic and contextually natural, while “father of the liar” follows the masculine personal possibility more explicitly.
