What relationship to Jesus’s word marks a disciple?
Menō means remain, abide, stay, or continue. John uses it as a major relational verb.
Why this default
“Remain in my word” is default because it preserves menō, one of John’s major relational verbs, and keeps its connection with remaining, dwelling, and abiding elsewhere in the Gospel. “Continue” explains ongoing practice but changes both the verb and “word” into smoother concepts.
