The traditional punctuation makes the man’s blindness serve a purpose: ‘but so that God’s works may be manifested.’ Because early manuscripts do not settle punctuation, the clause can instead begin an exhortation: ‘But let God’s works be manifested in him; we must work…’
Why this default
The traditional purpose clause remains the continuous-reading default, but the earliest manuscripts do not punctuate the sentence and the action-oriented boundary is grammatically possible.
