How should the passive baptism metaphor be rendered?
Jesus speaks of being immersed by an overwhelming experience; the passive form is important even when English smooths it.
Why this default
‘The baptism with which I am baptized’ is default because it preserves the noun-and-verb word family and the passive experience of being overwhelmed. ‘The baptism I undergo’ is smoother but hides the passive form; ‘immersion’ clarifies the image while abandoning Mark’s established term.
