The rare verb is related to kephalē, head, and most naturally means strike or wound on the head.
Why this default
‘Struck him on the head’ is the working default because the rare verb is transparently related to kephale, ‘head,’ and preserves Mark’s concrete violence. Ancient interpretation is not unanimous, so ‘treated shamefully’ remains possible but generalizes away the most visible lexical clue.
