The neighboring-person command stands beside love of God as the second great command.
Why this default
‘Your neighbor’ is default because the substantival ‘near one’ has become the established relational term and preserves the command’s personal reciprocity. ‘Fellow person’ broadens application helpfully but removes the nearness-language embedded in the source.
