What did the attendants do to Jesus?
The difficult expression says the attendants ‘received’ him with slaps—taking custody of him while striking him.
Why this default
‘The attendants received him with slaps’ is the working default because it preserves Mark’s difficult combination of lambano with rhapismata, possibly joining custody and blows. ‘Struck him’ gives the obvious action but drops the unusual verb; the custody option explains both senses more fully than the Greek explicitly does.
