How should the noon darkness be stated?
The Greek says darkness ‘came to be’ over the whole land or region.
Why this default
‘Darkness came over the whole land’ is default because skotos egeneto presents darkness as an event and ge can denote the land or region within the narrative horizon. ‘Fell’ is idiomatic but changes the verb’s image; ‘entire region’ resolves the geographic scope more narrowly.
