Who is said to be ‘outside’ themselves?
The attempted restraint is motivated by a reported judgment about Jesus’s mental or personal state.
Why this default
‘They were saying, “He is out of his mind”’ is default because it makes the singular subject of exestē explicit while retaining the reported-speech setting. ‘Outside himself’ exposes the verb’s image but can misleadingly suggest visionary ecstasy in English.
