Who is said to be ‘outside’ themselves?
The singular verb most naturally reports that people were saying Jesus was beside himself, but the clause’s subject and reported speech can be rendered with different degrees of explicitness.
Why this default
‘They were saying, “He is out of his mind”’ is default because it makes the singular subject of exestē explicit while retaining the reported-speech setting. ‘Outside himself’ exposes the verb’s image but can misleadingly suggest visionary ecstasy in English.
