How forcefully does Jesus address the sea?
The second command is a perfect passive: ‘be muzzled and stay that way.’ It echoes Jesus’s command to the unclean spirit in Mark 1.
Why this default
‘Be silent! Be muzzled!’ is default because it preserves both commands and the second verb’s perfect-passive force: become muzzled and remain so. It also retains Mark’s deliberate echo of Jesus’s command to the unclean spirit in chapter 1.
