How directly should the parables’ stated purpose be rendered?
Hina normally introduces purpose or result: ‘so that.’ The quotation’s final mēpote can mean ‘lest’ or ‘perhaps not,’ and the uncompromising wording should not be silently softened.
Why this default
‘So that’ is default because hina most directly presents the seeing-without-perceiving clause as purpose or intended result. The uncompromising syntax remains visible rather than being softened into an English concessive that the Greek does not explicitly supply.
