Which regional name stands in Mark 5:1?
The lake crossing brings Jesus and the disciples into a region whose transmitted name varies across ancient witnesses.
Why this default
Gerasenes is default because it has the strongest early support. The other names are ancient and reflect genuine geographic difficulty rather than trivial spelling noise.

InternalBecause Gerasa itself lies far from the lake, scribes had reason to replace the difficult name with places thought geographically closer.
