Egō eimi can be ordinary self-identification—‘it is I’—while also echoing the Greek scriptural language of divine self-disclosure.
Why this default
‘I am’ is default because egō eimi contains no written predicate and retains both ordinary self-identification and possible scriptural resonance. ‘It is I’ is natural English reassurance but supplies the predicate that Greek leaves implicit.
