Why does Jesus intend to pass by the disciples?
The phrase literally says he wanted or intended to pass by them. In biblical theophany language, ‘passing by’ can reveal divine presence rather than avoidance.
Why this default
‘He intended to pass by them’ is default because it preserves both ēthelen and parelthein without resolving the action into avoidance or approach. The scriptural-theophany resonance is important context, but translating it as revelation would place the interpretation inside the sentence.
