How do the Pharisees wash their hands?
Pygmē literally names the fist. The idiom may describe washing with a fistful of water, rubbing fist in palm, or washing carefully; its exact ritual action remains disputed.
Why this default
‘Wash their hands with a fist’ is the working default because it leaves the difficult dative pygmē visible instead of pretending the disputed ritual motion is settled. ‘Carefully’ and ‘ritually’ communicate plausible functions but replace the written body-image with interpretation.
