Kerdainō is gain or profit; the saying adopts commercial language and then overturns its accounting.
Why this default
‘Gain the whole world’ is default because it retains kerdaino’s compact commercial metaphor and the total scope of kosmon holon. ‘Profit by acquiring’ explains the transaction but turns one vivid verb into an interpretive phrase; ‘possess’ loses the accounting language.
