Prosmenō means remain with, continue beside, or stay devoted. The dative ties their continuing presence directly to Jesus.
Why this default
‘They have remained with me three days already’ is default because it retains prosmeno’s continuing attachment, the dative relation to Jesus, and the emphatic ‘already.’ ‘Stayed’ is smoother, but it can reduce their sustained presence to lodging or duration alone.
