How absolute is Jesus’s refusal of a sign?
The Greek uses a shortened Semitic oath: literally ‘if a sign will be given,’ with the consequence left unspoken. Its force is emphatic refusal.
Why this default
‘No sign will be given to this generation’ is default because it communicates the unequivocal force of the abbreviated Semitic oath in intelligible English. Reproducing only its literal ‘if’ clause preserves the form but leaves modern readers without the unspoken oath consequence needed to understand the refusal.
