What were the disciples debating on the road?
The comparative is literally ‘who is greater,’ which may ask about rank among them rather than an abstract title of ‘the greatest.’
Why this default
‘Who was greater’ is default because the Greek uses a comparative, presenting the disciples’ debate as relative rank among them. ‘The greatest’ is natural traditional English but silently turns the comparative into a superlative and makes the question more absolute.
